Miller vs McKinney at UFC 334: 22 Submission Wins vs. a 2:45 Average Fight Time
Terrance McKinney's UFC fights last 2 minutes and 45 seconds on average. Jim Miller has been fighting in the Octagon since October 2008. When the two lightweights meet at UFC 334 at Madison Square Garden on November 14, the bout pairs an 11-year age gap with a huge difference in pace.
Miller, 42, known as "A-10," is 39-19, and submissions are his signature: 22 of his wins (56%) came that way, alongside seven knockouts and ten decisions, with 17 first-round finishes in total. He isn't a volume striker, landing 2.92 significant strikes a minute at 42% accuracy and absorbing 3.43, with 57% striking defense. His real work happens on the mat: 1.72 submission attempts and 1.49 takedowns per 15 minutes, and he has completed 36 of his 100 takedown attempts. Of the 1,322 significant strikes he has landed in the UFC, 71% came standing, 15% in the clinch and 14% on the ground.
McKinney, 31, goes by "T. Wrecks," and none of his 18 wins went to the judges: nine knockouts, nine submissions, 17 first-round finishes. He lands 6.83 significant strikes a minute at 56% accuracy, 3.91 more than Miller, and his 1.09 knockdown average dwarfs Miller's 0.20. He wrestles, too, averaging 3.27 takedowns per 15 minutes, and 41% of his strikes land on the ground. The cost shows up on defense: he absorbs 4.07 a minute and avoids only 43% of the strikes thrown at him.
The physical edges belong to the younger man as well. McKinney is 5'10" to Miller's 5'8" and has a 73.5-inch reach to Miller's 71. His takedown defense sits at 73%, Miller's at 48%. On submission attempts, though, they're nearly even: 1.82 per 15 minutes for McKinney, 1.72 for Miller.
So can Miller get through the opening minutes against a man whose fights average under three, and drag the bout into the grappling exchanges where 22 submission wins count for more than speed?
