Nelson vs Perez Preview: Can the Range Fighter Avoid the Clinch?
Unranked lightweights, opposite habits. Kyle Nelson, "The Monster," fights almost entirely at range; Cristian Perez wants to close the distance and go to work in the clinch. They meet on Oct. 17 at Rogers Place in Edmonton on the UFC Fight Night card.
Nelson, a 35-year-old Canadian, is 17-7-1 and has been competing in the Octagon since December 2018. He can win any way: six by knockout, four by submission and seven on the scorecards, and eight of his victories came in the first round. Perez, a 27-year-old from Mexico, brings a much smaller UFC sample: 63 of 135 significant strikes landed. Here's how the numbers line up:
- Frame: Nelson stands 5-foot-11 to Perez's 5-foot-9, but the Mexican has the longer reach, 72 inches to 71.
- Where they strike: 84% of Nelson's significant strikes land standing, 13% in the clinch and 3% on the ground. For Perez it's 63% standing, 32% in the clinch and 5% on the ground.
- Output and accuracy: Nelson lands 3.60 per minute at 46%; Perez lands 3.30 at 47%.
- Damage taken: both absorb plenty, 4.58 per minute for Nelson and 4.56 for Perez. Nelson's significant strike defense is 54%; Perez's is just 39%.
- Power: Perez averages 0.79 knockdowns, Nelson 0.13.
- Grappling: Perez stops 88% of takedowns to Nelson's 67% and averages 0.79 submission attempts per 15 minutes to Nelson's 0.52.
Neither man's fights tend to go long. Nelson's UFC fights average 9:34 and Perez's 9:33, which leaves little time to settle into a rhythm. So can Nelson keep this at the distance where he does nearly all his work, or will Perez drag him into the clinch and turn it into a phone-booth fight? Watch the opening exchanges: Perez's 39% striking defense against Nelson's 3.60 per minute is the number that matters early.
The event gets underway at 3 p.m. local time, with the main card at 6 p.m. Come early and you won't miss a thing. Lock in your spot: Nelson vs Perez tickets in Edmonton.
