Parsons vs Souza Preview: Two Welterweight Punchers, Zero Takedowns

If you like fights that stay on the feet, circle this one. Jonny "The Sluggernaut" Parsons (9-3) of the United States meets Brazil's José "Canela" Souza (9-1) at welterweight on Nov. 7, and neither man has a submission win on his record. Parsons has scored seven of his nine wins by knockout (78%), Souza six of nine (67%); the rest went to the judges. Neither is ranked, but Parsons has the longer octagon résumé, having debuted in July 2023.

Physically, Souza has the edge. He's 24 to Parsons' 32 and stands 6-foot-3, a full six inches taller than the 5-foot-9 American, whose reach matches his height at 69 inches. The output, though, is close to even:

  • Volume: Parsons lands 4.65 significant strikes per minute, Souza 4.24.
  • Accuracy: 45% for Parsons, 46% for Souza.
  • Damage taken: 4.89 absorbed per minute for Parsons, 4.86 for Souza, so both eat more than they land, which is a recipe for a firefight.
  • Defense: Parsons avoids 60% of incoming strikes; Souza only 49%.
  • Power: Parsons carries a knockdown average of 1.20; Souza has yet to drop anyone in the octagon.
  • Where they land: 99% of Souza's significant strikes come at distance, compared with Parsons' 89% at distance, 7% in the clinch and 4% on the ground.

Don't expect grappling to change the picture: both men sit at zero takedowns and zero submission attempts per 15 minutes, and Parsons stops 67% of takedown attempts against him. Their fights run about the same length: 12:29 on average for Parsons, 12:52 for Souza. Souza, a Dana White's Contender Series product, made his octagon debut in April 2026 and has two first-round finishes. That leaves one question: can Souza's height and youth outweigh Parsons' heavier hands and sharper defense?
